Yeah, they are saying that many of the shots of Tom are legit; i.e. that him actually in a cockpit in a flying jet. Not sure if they actually taught him to fly (even basically) or that it's being controlled by someone else, but it is so awesome to see what it legitimately feels/looks like in there.

Cruise said the main selling point with him doing Top Gun and Top Gun 2 is that he gets to be in the jets for real. I'd be amazed if Top Gun 2 manages to be more dangerous than the helicopter duel in Mission: Impossible - Fallout though.
