Five police officers on trial for 'shooting New Orleans looter and burning his body' in **** of Hurricane Katrina

* First of four cases of alleged police ********* in the **** of devastating hurricane

* Senior officers expected to testify over 'lawlessness' of New Orleans

Five police officers have gone on trial charged in the shooting of a man in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and burning his body to cover up the evidence.

Henry Glover was shot dead in the Algiers section of New Orleans on September 2, 2005. His charred remains were found days later in a burnt-out car near the Mississippi River.

The trial came after a federal investigation into several cases of alleged police ********* in the days after the hurricane, which ****** more than 1,800 people, flooded New Orleans and devastated much of the Gulf Coast.

Former officer David Warren was guarding a detective bureau at a mall when the shooting occurred.

He is said to have opened fire on Mr Glover from a second floor balcony.

Officers Dwayne Scheuermann and Gregory McRae are charged with burning Mr Glover's body and his 2001 Chevrolet Malibu and with assaulting civilians who tried to come to his aid.

And Robert Italiano and Robert McCabe are charged with obstruction of justice for submitting a false and inaccurate incident report on the shooting.

A police report revealed that Warren fired at Mr Glover after he saw him approaching the police station with something in his hand.

Mr Glover is said to have driven to the mall with a friend to collect some stolen goods that had been left there.

Greg McRae is also accused of burning Mr Glover's body and Robert McCabe, right, is charged with submitting a false report on the shooting along with Robert Italiano, below

After he was shot, the injured man was driven to a school by a stranger, along with his ******* Edward King.

It was there that the two men were allegedly assaulted by police officers, who then drove Mr Glover to the Algiers levee before setting fire to the car with his body inside.

Michael Ellis, defending Warren, said he blamed the incident on the chaos after Hurricane Katrina.

He told WDSU: 'Everybody was afraid of everything that transpired.

'Hopefully we'll get a jury that's going to listen to all the evidence presented and hear our client's position, as we think it was a justifiable shooting on his behalf.'

If convicted, Warren faces life in prison. Scheuermann and McRae could be jailed for up to 60 years and Italiano and McCabe for 30.

The case is the first resulting from the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division investigation into 'patterns or practices' of alleged misconduct within the New Orleans police department.

Federal prosecutors have charged 20 officers in four separate cases stemming from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Earlier this year, four officers were indicted on charges of ******* two men in an incident on Danziger Bridge.

A teenager and a 40-year-old disabled man were shot dead on the bridge on September 4, six days after the hurricane devastated the city.

Current officers - including some among top positions in New Orleans Police Department - are expected to testify in both cases on the breakdown in authority in the aftermath of the storm.

This is the same city where residents were shooting at police, firemen and Coast Guard helicopters? Hard to find sympathy for anyone that may have been a part of a disgusting display of human behavior in the aftermath of a natural disaster....

There was a documentary on HBO about post-Katrina NOLA, and I remember one guy who got shot with a shotgun after approaching armed store owners after they told him to stay back. The director was obviously trying to get sympathy for the guy, but all I could think was "Why didn't you stay away??." It's like people who intentionally antagonize cops and then act surprised when the cops beat the **** out of them... I don't get it.

Who was shooting at rescue workers again?

Because I believe such reports were created out of thin air by right wingers in this country who wanted to justify not helping their fellow citizens.

Fact of the matter is that the NOPD has a long history of SYSTEMIC corruption. The case where an NOPD officer robbed a chinese restaurant and ****** their partner who was working an off duty security detail, along with all the adults in the business. Only the fact that **** there hid, and the NOPD officer was arrogant enough to come to investigate the crime (and was fingered by the ****) led to his arrest, and the case where an NOPD officer was heading a **** ring, along with other criminal activities, and he was arrogant enough to order a hit over the police radio on a woman who had provided information to the police concerning said officer's activities. She was ******, and he went to death row! There have been cases where NOPD officers pulled women over and ***** them (fired and convicted...not made up)! The NOPD as a department is CORRUPT AS HELL, and it has been for years and years! When you have that level of systemic corruption, the police aren't afraid to do anything, because they figure they will get away with it!

Additionally, much of the "war zone" crap that came out in the **** of the hurricane was a bunch of misinformation and downright lies by people to hype things up. Many of the things that were mentioned in the media....NEVER HAPPENED. One such example is the little girl who was ***** in the Super Dome......NEVER HAPPENED!

You had NOPD officers who looted car dealerships, many left town and never came back....but were subsequently arrested. You had NOPD officers that looted businesses....many were arrested after things settled down. What the officers did in this case was UNACCEPTABLE & CRIMINAL! If they believed they were justified, as you seem to suppose, why did the burn the body in a vehicle? Doesn't sound like they believed their actions were justified. Given the systemic corruption that you have with the NOPD, they figured nothing would come of anything given all the chaos that Katrina caused. Only thing is that the water went down, things started getting back to normal, and then the **** that went on started to smell. In came the Feds, and heads rightly rolled! Katrina provided BAD COPS to really take the *** gloves off and get really BAD AND DIRTY!

Are there good cops? Yes! Would you find many in the NOPD (or many Louisiana Police/Sheriff's Departments), probably not! When you have the level of corruption that is present, and you have to rely on each other in life and death situations on a regular basis, you couldn't have a few clean cops....they wouldn't be trusted by the corrupt ones!

In short, what these officers did is never acceptable! To compare the NOPD to other police departments is like comparing apples to oranges! The NOPD is and has been CORRUPT AS HELL for years! A natural disaster is never an excuse for cops who were probably bad to begin with.....to be really vile and evil!

Actually the bull **** came out of the mouths of local politicians! I believe they did it due to repeating things that were rumor, and out right lying to try to garner sympathy! They were too stupid to realize that there might be a backlash from hearing the people were acting like *******! But after the dust settled so to speak, most of the infamous stories concerning the behavior of citizens was proven to be totally false!
