2008 The Year in Sport -- In review

For this thread...give your HIGHLIGHT of the Year and your LOWLIGHT of the year in Sport. No ties. Gotta pick one for each.

HIGHLIGHT of the Year: Federer vs Nadal for Wimbeldon. The greatest tennis match I've ever seen, STILL the most memorable event this year in sports.

LOWLIGHT of the Year: Roger "the douchebag" Clemens.

Thats easy for me, at least the highlight.

Big Blue (The New York Giants) knock off Dallas in the playoffs and then go on to beat the undeafeated New England Patriots in the super bowl.

Lowlight:plexico is out packing a piece and gets busted after he shoots himself in the leg.Sometimes these jocks and being pampered since they 1st showed athletic ability and getting away with a lot comes back to bite them.As an example I heard the door guys at the club knew Plexico was packing but let him in anyway. He was treated as a VIP and is probably like a lot of other players used to that.

HIGHLIGHT: Kansas beating Memphis in NCAA National Championship game(I won a lot of money from that). Also, seeing New England choke in Super Bowl.

LOWLIGHT: Celtics beating Lakers(Im a huge Kobe fan) in Finals.

HIGHLIGHT of the Year: Federer vs Nadal for Wimbeldon. The greatest tennis match I've ever seen, STILL the most memorable event this year in sports.

That would probably be my highlight aswell :hatsoff:. I dont watch sport enough to have a lowlight :dunno:

The Second-Hottest Man in my Mother's Basement
HIGHLIGHT: Usian Bolt becomes the fastest man in the world.

LOWLIGHT: Dolphins go 1-15.

Highlight: Seeing the New England Patriots get their perfect season ruined by the underdog New York Giants.

Lowlight: The Detroit Lions, they might very well (and more likely than not) have a winless season this time next week. They perhaps had the worst General Manager in at least American sports history and somehow he lasted to his eight year with them.

^ Certainly makes us Dolphin fans feel better about ourselves!

highlights - rays improbable run to a division title and eventual world series, michael phelps 8 gold medals, nadal/federer final, Giants run to the super bowl, jon lester's no hitter, celtics return to glory, falcons and dolphins turn around stories, Usain Bolt's Olympic performance, Kansas/Memphis finals and the Chalmers 3 to send it into overtime

i dont like to focus on the negative....but the seemingly weekly Cowboy drama was a low light, along with the Plaxico Burress Fallout

highlight: Cubs swept out of playoffs - (in a year of financial and international turmoil we needed the security of knowing some things never change :D)

lowlight: Clemens

Am I the only one unimpressed with Phelps?? 8 gold medals would be impressive, if you didnt do the same thing each time to get it. It's like running, then running with my arms out, then running with my arms against my sides etc.

I am unimpressed with the Olympics as a whole anyways. A bunch of sports nobody gives a shit about for 4 years, and then all of a sudden everybody is the most patriotic person in the world? Give me a break.

Anyways. The Rays run was awesome. As was Philadelphia's WS win. BUT, Federer vs Nadal was the best.

The worst? Lakers losing to the fucking Celtics.

Highlights

Montreal Canadien Eastern NHL Championship
It was unexpected and very satisfying after all those slump years. Making it to 2nd round of Stanley Cup playoffs was also nice. Even after our elimination in the hands of Philadelphia Flyers (and especially Martin Biron's godlike performances), the fans acclaimed their team... and have very high expectations this year!

Modern Triathlon Competition at Beijing
It was the first time i saw a complete competition on TV and i was simply amazed. Simon Whitfield, a canadian, won the silver medal. Emotionnally, it was one of my most intense sport moment of the year.

The greatest comeback in NHL History
The NY Rangers were leading 5-0 over Montreal Canadien at the Bell Center. With Henrik Lundqvist in the nets, all hopes were lost... but... the Habs managed to turn the game upside down and win 6-5. Intense.

CONCAF Champions League Montreal Impact Run
Against all odds, the Montreal Impact are qualified for the Quarter Finals after beating many teams of higher level leagues. Cinderella story of the year... which keep going in 2009.

Lowlights

Flatwater Canadian Star Choking
Adam Van Koeverden was the international leader for the past 2 years and was expected to dominate the canoe/kayak races at Beijing. He failed miserably. He was almost crying in interviews after the competitions.

Injuries in the NHL
Both Patrice Bergeron (Boston) and Simon Gagné (Philadelphia) missed almost all last season due to cerebral commotions. Who knows what would have happend in the playoffs if both theses players were there? Same for Sheldon Souray (Edmonton) with his shoulder.

Montreal Alouettes loosing another CFL Grey Cup Final
While the 2008 Grey Cup was a great match, the Montreal Alouettes, hosting the match, lost again... Since 2000, the Alouettes made the final 6 times and won only once (in 2002). Anthony Calvillo who is now the recordman quarterback in the CFL in almost all categories still have his choker reputation.

The Death of Montreal Grand Prix
One name: Bernie Ecclestone. Two words: Fuck you.
