I don't know...in Nixon's day, the idea of country over party still existed and Democrats controlled Congress (and principled Republicans were still two words you could say without *******). Today's Republicans gleefully **** on democratic norms in their power grabs with propaganda-gobbling useful idiots happy to support them, and spineless, often-equally-corrupt Democrats who'd rather lose to a wannabe autocrat than elect someone progressive, because that means they get to keep riding the gravy train.
If there is a smoking *** - what the GOP does with that will show everyone the true value of the institutions of the USA. Here's to hoping they make the correct choice - it's not like they can't get almost everything they want from Pence, and the world can sigh in relief that a manchild no longer has control of the world's largest nuclear arsenal.
