McDonald's To Start All-Day Breakfast

The long wait for McDonald's breakfast lovers is almost over.

Company officials announced Tuesday that they will begin serving breakfast all-day nationally on Oct. 6. Restaurant operators approved the move in a vote Tuesday.

McDonald's has been testing all-day breakfast in select markets for several months after hearing for years from customers that they wanted to be able to get an Egg McMuffin no matter what time of day. Over the last year, the company had counted 120,000 requests on Twitter calling for them to sell breakfast items all day.

"It's been the number one requested thing from our customers for years," McDonald's President Mike Andres told USA TODAY. "The people have spoken and we are responding."

The company, however, had long resisted expanding the availability of breakfast out of concern that restaurant operators just don't have enough grill space to do breakfast and lunch items simultaneously.

But in July, McDonald's made its intentions clear, when they told franchisees to prepare for a potential, but not set-in-stone, nationwide roll-out of the all-day breakfast menu this fall.

Many, but not all breakfast items, will be available on the all-day menu. But the most popular staples, such as the Egg McMuffin, the Sausage McMuffin and hash browns will be ubiquitous. (In Southern markets, where customers order biscuit sandwiches, those will be on the menu.)

To make room for all-day breakfast, Andres said some items will have to be pared from the menu to give space-strapped restaurant operators the ability to do breakfast and lunch simultaneously. In Nashville, which has been testing all-day breakfast, operators decided to ditch McWraps.

Andres said the decision on what will be pared back will be made market by market.

The company began spreading news of their plans for a national roll-out of all-day breakfast on Twitter by tweeting the news at customers who had previously told them they wanted McDonald's to expand availability of its breakfast menu.

"We felt the best way to do this was a very personal and engaging announcement," said Deborah Wahl, the burger chain's chief marketing officer.

Fucking A! :coolthumb: Pedal to the Metal!
Sometimes we need a change of pace, need to get out of a rut.

It certainly works for Jack in the Box. Of course, that doesn't guarantee that it'll work for McDonald's. Maybe the fact that there are way more McDonald's than there are Jack in the Boxes will make for the grand plan not having the same success for McDonald's as Jack in the Box.

Another factor in the equation that is different between McDonald's and Jack in the Box is that Jack in the Box makes the food to order, so they don't have that issue that McDonald's is worried about ... enough Grill space.

Then again, I think that the fact that it WILL be an abbreviated breakfast menu will give it a much better chance of success.

a good idea when you are in a hurry

That's good. I wish they'd expand it and offer big macs and mcnuggets at 6 am. And shamrock shakes all year round. Right guys? That might not turn around their slumping sales figures, but it'd make me happy.

I wonder if I can get them to put one of those thick hash brown patties in an Egg McMuffin. Any time of the day is good for that.

For the EMPEROR!!
I haven't eaten Macca's in years and don't plan to eat it ever again, so it don't mean squat to me. Besides from what I remember that breakfast crap they serve was the worst of the lot. Urgghh!

You can have it to yourselves.

i'm sure it would be a popular idea...personally the **** they serve sickens me and i don't understand how people can actually enjoy it but to each their own i guess...

Ehh...even unhealthy things can be eaten in moderation with no serious effects. I just like the taste of breakfast meats, eggs, butter, fried potatoes, and muffins together. I don't think too much about the cultural impact of it. Stuff either taste good or it doesn't, and I judge what I eat on that when I'm not eating something for it's health benefits.

As an ex-manager, I don't envy any store manager having to deal with the logistics of this. Especially the smaller stores. This has a potential for a lot of product to just go bad because it has to be pre-made, but isn't used.

There's McD's and BurgerKings in Europe that serve lunch in the morning along side of a breakfast menu (Outside of the UK, breakfast is pretty limited though).

That's cool. BK over here started serving limited lunch items for breakfast about a year ago.

Maybe they can experiment with something like keeping their breakfast items stash supplied only until around 12:00 Noon or even 1:00PM. After that, any breakfast ordered would be prepared upon being ordered.

Bad idea on McDonald's part

1. McDonald's has been making an effort to slim down their menu but by offering breakfast 24/7 they've just added a entire new menu in addition to the regular lunch menu. McDonald's customers should expect long waits for their food

2. Scarcity creates demand. What made McDonald's breakfast so special was that you could only get it at a specific time. But now that it's going to be served 24/7 it's going to lose it's appeal.

I disagree with the scarcity thing. The breakfast will only be available for those who want it. It won't be being ***** fed to anyone. So I doubt anyone is going to get bored or pissed off simply because it's being made available 24/7.

It would be a different story if we found ourselves in a situation whereby for some reason we were having to eat solely McDonald's ... or any other food for that matter, breakfast, lunch and dinner for ohhh say --- a month or two. THEN it would lose its appeal. Heck, we'd be downright sick of ANY food with which we found ourselves in that situation.

Sure, the McDonald's All-Day Breakfast idea might still flop, but I doubt it'll be because it was made available. If it flops it'll be because they didn't have the right plan on how to run it or because it's just an idea that doesn't fit such a big chain. IMO of course.

Yea, I don't know.

The main store I worked at (about a year before I quit, I was being pimped out to other stores in our franchise as replacement manager and/or book keeper...I literally could do any position but maintenance at that point) had a pretty large grill area. Meanwhile, the Walmart McDonalds the main store I worked at ran, wouldn't be able to easily do this at all. Hell, it could barely keep enough fries for the lunch rush.

I'm sure that stores with smart store and shift managers would be able to recognize the trend after a month and be able to organize it to keep the waste minimal without impacting service time too terribly much.

I just don't envy them at all. I had to come up with enough solutions for crap during the time I worked there....like WTF you do when you run out of mcrib sauce because everyone and their ****** requests a portion on the side and distribution puts a limit of cases on you (answer...Costco).

Shakes head in disgust. Surely in the great scheme of life people can avoid going to McfuckingDonalds and all of the other fast food establishments? It is all rather sad.

Breakfast this morning for me took about 10mins. Cook some smoked bacon, slice a tomato, slice open a baguette, open a bag of rocket. BLT made. Egg McMuffin fuck off.
