The R-word? Are these people fucking kidding me? They are nothing more than a bunch of hypocrites and this is another of the "THOUGHT POLICE" in action. At least here in the U.S., the last time I checked the Constitution does not protect your feelings. Nothing more than plain and simple censorship, and how about some of the words they used? Uhh, since they are so unacceptable WHY IS BEING USED HERE? I have an idea how about worry about what is more important that BULLSHIT like this crap. People these days have become soft and are nothing more than a bunch of pansies. How about growing up and stop acting like a bunch fags? I was picked on continually when I was younger. But did this make me want to censor people's language? Uhhh, NO!! I stood up for myself and became a better person because of it.

It's called having some balls and stop trying to push their own beliefs and wants on other people. Its the same with the abortion issue. I don't use the the R word - stuff like that just isn't a part of my vocab. I can see why alot of people get offended by it, however I don't feel that its as derogatory as the N word or the F word (not fuck - the one that rhymes with bag) ....because the R word alot of the time isn't used to make fun of those with disabilities, its used as a synonym to words like 'stupid' or 'idiotic'. I guess its how you use it I suppose.

I am conscientious in my use of the word "retard." One of my ***'s brothers had Down's Syndrome and spent most of his life institutionalized. That was in the 1940's and normalization wasn't really thought of all that much.

I'm much more skeptical of that campaign that featured Wanda Sykes and the suppression of the word "Fag."

Words are expressions of ideas where context is key.

Limiting people's vocabulary only ****** them to find new words to express their thoughts. Take the word "******".

You take that away from my vocabulary and I hypothetically can't use it as an insult right?

But if I want to insult someone and I choose their race as the focus of my venom; I could just as well say:

"You people". or "You're all alike". or "You're a terrible human being".

Harsh words...in that context would need to be ****** as they are just as hurtful imo as any other.

So ban the phrase "you people" or "terrible human being" and any other phrase or word that has ever upset anyone. Then we'll all be safe from errant thoughts that make us feel bad about ourselves temporarily. Then when we're all comfortably brain dead we won't have to worry about communicating with each other at all, as it will be impossible or incredibly shallow and lack any substance.

the word retard though is a direct insult toward mentally handicapped people.

so really if society is hung up on the word ****** so much because it might offend black people then they should be equally hung up on the word retard.........actually even more hung up because at least most black people can defend themselves from the word (which is usually in the form of a violent ******) whereas mentally handicapped people in general can not.
but i guess society has more compassion for blacks feelings than some poor *** born with a disabilty.

I would say more specifically that retard is to "impede" or slow down or restrict.

Telling someone they are "retarded" doesn't mean it's an insult if they actually are. It's all about context; if someone had a ***** and they were trying to explain their mental condition to someone they might use the word. In that situation it would be perfectly fine.

The slang as an insult just happens to me more popular. Making it socially ***** in some people's minds to use the word at all.
