Most Over-Rated Athlete

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Tim Duncan has been on 4 (FOOOOOUR) NBA Championship teams...all of which have been the Spurs. I'm pretty sure that being in the starting lineup on all 4 of those teams wasn't just a coincidence.

In my opinion, I personally feel that once an athlete is immediately associated with being a key player on a winning team/dynasty, they are automatically rendered as "over-rated" by the general public.

For example, Brian Urlacher. Brian Urlacher has been one of the most dominating linebackers in recent years and was considered as such during the beginning of his career...when the Bears were a joke. Now that the Bears have been a decent team for the past few years, Urlacher is now thought of as over-rated to most. Why? Because his TEAM is good? The same thing has happened to players such as Tom Brady, Shaun Alexander and Derek Jeter just to name a few.

Stating once again...this is my opinion.

I've played baseball since I was a little ***. At the age of 14, I began getting scouted by MLB teams to play catcher. I was involved in practices with the Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins and let me tell you...

Baseball players are ATHLETES

says who?
you sound like Al Bundy.

baseball players might be athletes to you because the practice was too much (im assuming it was too much for you because appearantly none of those teams did take you, but i bet it was the infamous knee injury that stopped you from getting pro), but take the pansiest sport on this planet, soccer, no regular baseball player would survive a stamina practice unit.
being all buff doesnt make you an athlete sir.

again you have shown that you know absolutely nothing about baseball.

Soccer is a tough ass sport watched and played by and revered the world over, it's also perhaps the most natural sport to play since even among **** in America (which has a huge nationalist bias against soccer) it is supremely popular and virtually everywhere else it is the #1 sport for both **** and adults. We have only shinguards to protect us, which is why we don't beat the hell out of each other like in American sports - what is the point of that, to cover yourself in artificial padding and play sports where you beat the hell out of each other. Yep, real tough guys. In England and Aussie, the sport where they beat the hell out of each other is Rugby or ARF, and no pads are needed and they're just as ****** as in American Football. So I don't think any Americans should, ever, ever be even allowed to deem a sport "pansiest".

The **** bellies on so many baseball players sort of goes against what you're saying. Their obsessive need to take steroids also. And then there's the fact that baseball is not only "pansyish" but also more boring to most people than watching paint dry. And (half of) America loves it, and also thinks soccer is pansyish, and that putting artificial pads on and banging into each other makes you tough, so I think then when it comes to sports opinions, (half of) Americans should automatically be stricken from the "creditability" scale.

Sorry.

It is rare that i disagree with you, but I need to speak my mind here.
I will grant you that soccer is a very physically demanding sport, no doubt. I will also say that physically, baseball is not a tough sport. Now on the reverse side, pitching in baseball is a highly skilled position. If you have seen some of the games great pitchers of past and present play, you would know this, and to deny it is just shortsighted. The skill it takes to make a baseball do what a lot of these guys make it do is something most of us don't have. Why do you think it is rare for a pitcher to be pitching into his 40's? Not because they are lazy, but because the physical strain on a pitcher is tremendous. As far as hitters, it disgusts me when they take steroids because that, IMO, is cheating. The ones that don't however are also skilled. I highly doubt that most of us here could hit a 100mph fastball 400ft. Just because a sport isn't as demanding as another is no reason to make it seem like the guys who play it aren't real athletes, they are different kinds of athletes. The people who deem soccer pansyish may not be correct, but it is their opinion, and you of all people should have no problem with people expressing their opinion, even if you think it's wrong, because your opinions on here are not always welcomed with open arms, but you are still allowed to express them aren't you? Your statement that we should not be allowed to deem a sport pansyish, is prejudice, plain and simple, weather you choose to accept or believe it. You don't like the opinion a lot of Americans have about soccer so we should be stripped of our right to express our opinion? You don't have to like the opinion, but you also have no right to say that someone shouldn't be allowed to have it either. Oh and what's with the "Sorry" at the end of your post? Why should you be sorry for expressing your opinion? I'm pretty certain you weren't sorry for insulting American's, so why put that there at all? There is so much more I could say here, but I have said enough for now. Peace.

What's your point? If I put a professional soccer player in the middle of a match with a professional mixed martial artist they probably have around 100% chance of getting their asses kicked. Having endurance doesn't make you an athlete either it would seem, not that it isn’t important. Soccer isn't tough. It might be hard to do good but there is a difference. I don't consider people that run around all the time and flop at the slightest bit of contact tough. In fact considering even people like racecar drivers need endurance more than muscle or running speed it would seem muscle and speed might very well be a better indicator if somebody is an athlete since a lot of things that take endurance aren't sports while completive events where you train to get faster or stronger usually are.

No offense, but I've played baseball my entire life and I just find some of your comments, well...hilarious.

The **** bellies on so many baseball players sort of goes against what you're saying.

Somehow 8 or 9 players with a little bit of weight equals "so many"?...good math. 99% of baseball players are in EXCELLENT physical condition. There are VERY FEW exceptions to this.

Their obsessive need to take steroids also.

OBSESSIVE NEED? REALLY? Besides the main names you hear on the news (Bonds, Giambi, Sosa, McGwire, Sheffield, even Palmeiro) I challenge you to name ONE other baseball player who is legitimately associated with steroid usage.

And then there's the fact that baseball is not only "pansyish" but also more boring to most people than watching paint dry

a) "PANSYISH?" Try standing in the batters box while a 97MPH fastball comes screaming at your head. Try sprinting to catch a fly ball and crash into a wall at full speed, knowing there's a good chance you're going to get hurt in the process. Try holding your ground at home plate while a 6' 2", 215LB man is charging at you, full steam ahead, take his hit AND hold onto the ball. I've done it numerous times and trust me...someone who is "pansyish" can't do what I do.

b) "more boring to most people than watching paint dry"...That's exactly what someone who is completely uneducated about the game of baseball would say. Point made.

America has baseball. England and Australia have cricket where you have a flat bat and only have to redirect the ball for 5 days and maybe run 10 yards if you can't hit it over a rope thats on the ground.

as for over rated players, most nba players.

Speaking of European NBA players, I'm surprised Dirk Nowitzki's name didn't come up more often. League MVP?? C'mon!

Being humble and mild mannered, he's certainly a very endearing person compared to many other of the obnoxious stars in sports. I'll admit I want to like the guy and want to see him to well. Furthermore, international stars are good for the NBA.

But his game has some serious shortcomings if you're talking about an MVP. He's kinda soft and can be harassed and bullied around by players almost half-a-foot shorter. He can't post up (and the guy's seven feet tall!) and he's not a particularly good defender. I don't even think he's the best power forward in the league let alone the league MVP. But the press and commentators just fawn over and coddle him constantly like he's god's gift, while he himself seems to want to shy away from the spotlight and the role of superstar. Kinda weird situation ... I still like the guy and want him to do well in the NBA though.

Exactly. And I don't know about a sport when the ball hits you in head, they call it a good play.

I'm pretty sure being offered a contract with the Albuquerque Isotopes, (which is the AAA team for the Florida Marlins) means they wanted me.

WOW....

I think this is the first time I've ever disagreed with a comment from D-rock....:D

Players like Tommy Smith, Peter Storey, Norman Hunter and Peter Lorimer never flopped "at the slightest bit of contact"

I was using hyperbole to make a point. There are far too many that do flop. I thought watching basketball was bad in that respect until I watched football (non-American variety). It seems the nature of the game lends itself to it too much.
